May 13, 2019The Parallels of Code and Commonplace
June 21, 2019VS Live Share is a Plugin for VS Code that allows multiple users to collaborate on the same project in real time.
Whenever I am working on a project and I am not exactly sure how to solve an issue that I stumble across, I normally turn to one of my colleagues and ask them for assistance in whatever it is that I am working on at the time. Most of the time, this ends up with my colleagues and I awkwardly crowding around my laptop. With VSC Live Share, both my colleagues and I can be comfortably seated at our desks while being able to contribute to the same project.
This extension comes in especially handy when I am at home working on a project. If I get stuck on something I normally end up phoning a friend to help me out. Most of the time when I do this, it ends up with my friend and I in a Skype call where we are sharing our screens with one another. This can be a huge hassle for a number of reasons: You may have a few settings and extensions that your friend is not familiar with, which might make navigating your VSC a little more difficult for them. Your friend, who is trying to help, can’t navigate the project without telling you what to do first. VSC Live Share helps solve all of those problems by allowing multiple users to connect to the same workspace with their own instances of VSC. Not only that, but they can make their own changes, navigate, follow along, and view other peoples work as well within that shared workspace.
Here’s how you can share your workspace with other Developers.
- Open your VSC and navigate your way to the market place and find the extension VS Code Live Share.
- Install the Extension
- Down in the status bar, you will find a Share button, Click on that.
- A link to your workspace will be copied to the clipboard, Share that link with whomever you would like to collaborate with. (Your Collaborator will need to have the VS Code Live Share extension installed as well in order for them to Collaborate.)
- And that’s it! Now you have a workspace that you and your colleagues can work on at the same time.
