In part one of “Keys to Workplace Wellness” I explained that to have a well rounded approach to wellness we must consider mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical well-being. All of these directly impact our day-to-day work place and overall life experience. In part three of this three part blog we will cover Spiritual well being. I will highlight just a couple points that have really helped me along the way.
What is your access point
We are all as different in our approach to our spiritual life as we are in our skills/interests in development. This is exactly what makes the kingdom and a development community a beautiful thing. This variety extends to the myriad of ways that we as individuals connect with each other and to God. I would propose that the most important key for a healthy spiritual life is to identify what your access points to God are.
For example, some love to read. In this case scripture may be near and dear to their heart. Others love to listen and/or play music. This may lend itself to times of personal worship. Still others crave fellowship and service opportunities. This might involve more social interaction or looking for ways to bless others.
Whatever the case may be it is crucial that you understand what your access points are. By understanding what your specific access point might be allows you to more effectively move in those areas while at the same time begin to understand that others might not be the same as you. Embracing the differences in access points is what builds up an individual and therefore the community as a whole.
Take the Time
In today’s society, life seems to have become all about efficiency and convenience while on the go from one thing to another. To be honest, this isn’t much different in the development world. Technologies are ever changing and devs are being asked to do more with less every day. In this model of existence the one thing that universally seems to be the limiting factor is Time. In order to keep up many things get pushed aside and/or deprioritized.
I strongly encourage you not to let your spiritual walk be one of those things falls to the wayside. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter what the time looks like, it’s of the utmost importance that we simply take the time. Whether it’s 15 – 30 minutes carved out in the morning, a walk over lunch, or a quiet time just before bed. Having that time to be still and connect can help (re)focus on what is really important.
I love how this is put in the book of Matthew, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” I find there is nothing like the mental clarity I have after taking the time to seek Him first. The worries of the day just seem to melt away.I hope you enjoyed the journey through wellness and the last key I will leave you with is, please Take the Time! You won’t regret it.
